CHURCH OF SAINT-PIERRE-D'OLÉRON
Rising to a height of almost 40 m, the church gave many a curious visitor an unobstructed view of the city
The history of this church, listed as a Monument Historique, dates back to 1068. It is not yet the edifice that rises into the Oléron sky, but a chapel of which all that remains is a column and the bases of an arch. After being looted and destroyed, the church was rebuilt in 1606. Its octagonal bell tower was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century under the reign of Louis XVI. At almost 40 m high, it has long served as a landmark for sailors.
