THE MUD TOWER
Tower installed on a cliff, dominating a peaceful countryside, today ideal place for hiking
Located on a cliff, the tower of Broue dominates today a peaceful countryside. But one must imagine that at the time of its construction, in the 11th century, this fortress stood in the middle of the ocean on the Marteau Island. It dominated the Gulf of Saintonge, protecting the entrance to the commercial port where ships loaded with salt arrived. From the 16th century, the silting up of the gulf forced men to abandon this site which is today an ideal place for a walk in the marsh and a picnic break.
