ST. PETER'S CATHEDRAL
Cathedral in Saintes with a dome of the south cross with an imposing bell tower covered with a lead dome
In the 12th century, there was already a Romanesque cathedral, of which the dome of the southern crosspiece remains. The rebuilding, begun in the 15th century, was interrupted by the Wars of Religion which damaged the nave; resumed in the 17th century, it was continued until the 18th century, without ever being completed. The result is a strange building with an imposing bell tower covered with a lead dome, a luminous interior with its exposed beams, a bare and composite interior where Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles are mixed, and finally a 13th century cloister.
