VILLENEUVE-LA-COMTESSE CASTLE
Located in the east of the department, this fort castle was in the midst of two important fiefdoms: the Guyenne and Poitou. It is thus understood why such a monument was built in the XIII century by Count Raoul of Exoudun. A French and French tour during the Hundred Years War, he can boast of being one of the fiefdoms of Aliénor d'Aquitaine, Countess of Poitou. Despite the outrage of time, he kept his dungeon, towers, drawbridge and the English style defence system. Opened since 1997, his visit is a real pleasure. Now you have to borrow the drawbridge!

First Château de Villeneuve la Comtesse is one of the very rare small fortresses of plain dating from the 15th century in the region.
Its modest but massive keep has 3 small rooms on one another (entrance, the guards' room and high room). It is entrance which is the most characteristic of the art of warfare of the 15th century with its drawbridge, its defensive cistern bleeding harrow harrow (which is no more) and its two doors exterior and interior (which is no more), the pole-axes, loopholes, etc. Everything you can find in defence system is but into small.
The Heritage Day was very pleasant, like the passionate and exciting owner. It spoke to us about each stone and each element of defence.
This day, the owner had arranged a medieval festival, this is why a participation of a few Euro was required. The good deal! And the show was there:
- costumes from the Middle Ages
- perfume merchant
- craftsman coats of mail,
- chefs, good monks and gentle maidens
- combat armour and
- and hypocras galore
See this petit château especially when the owner is there! You won't be disappointed and the irritating customers skinflints stay at home and watch TV…
Very interesting visit by the owner: an enthusiast of old stones and the Middle Ages.
To recommend
There are only 2 small empty rooms to visit. For the price is a bit loud. I recommend it with everyone.
