Public fountain accessible by a staircase, fed by the Saint-Pierre stream in Airvault
A few meters from the Saint-Pierre church, the old public fountain is accessible by a staircase. Fed by the Saint-Pierre brook, it flows underground under the main street of the city and empties into the Thouet. The only source of water supply until the 19th century, it was not underground in the Middle Ages. Today it is vaulted and has been protected over the centuries because of the elevation of the ground. You should know that its length was doubled in the 19th century and that the blue color of the water in the well is due to a microscopic algae.
