SAINT EUTROPIC CHURCH
This Romanesque church of the XIIth century dedicated to Saint Eutrope, is very well preserved
This 12th century Romanesque church is dedicated to Saint Eutrope, apostle of Saintonge, the first bishop of Saintes and a martyr. This beautiful building unfortunately suffered from the Wars of Religion and had to be restored and sometimes even rebuilt for some parts as was the case of the nave in 1877. The carved ornamentation is however well preserved: capitals with smooth baskets or decorated with flat leaves, cords and wolf teeth. The dome deserves attention: its Byzantine style is carried on pendentives and covers a narrow and high hemicircular apse. Very well preserved, this pretty church in the Saintongeais Romanesque style deserves to be admired.
