LIME KILNS
These 49-meter-high lime kilns, located in Les Coulonges-sur-l'Autize, are part of our industrial heritage.
In the 19th century, the exploitation of the Saint-Laurs mining basin brought prosperity to Coulonges-sur-l'Autize and its inhabitants. This is evidenced by this large brick chimney, 49m high, located away from the town, which was part of an annular lime kiln of the Hoffman system. Some of the lime kilns still exist, hidden under brambles, but if you keep your eyes open you may discover some of them during your strolls. The brick water tower, always present, used to supply the house to which it was connected. It is composed of a hollowed-out tank but also a well to fill the tank with a pump. This industrial heritage remains, in spite of the years and the abandonment, very well preserved.
