L'ORANGERIE
Orangery housing an exhibition gallery crowned by a superb inverted ship's hull roof structure in La Mothe-Saint-Héray
The Orangerie de La Mothe-Saint-Héray is what remains of the Château de La Mothe, a medieval fortress remodeled in the 17th century. The building, designed by Nicolas Tillon, a master mason from the town of Richelieu, was inaugurated in 1634. While it has retained its original mission of sheltering lemon and orange trees in winter, it is now complemented by a contemporary art gallery crowned by a superb inverted ship's hull frame. You can stroll through its formal gardens all summer on two itineraries. Various events, such as the Antiquarian Book Fair (October).
