SAINT-PIERRE CHURCH
Church built at the beginning of the 12th century, one of whose interior walls houses a tomb closed by a black marble table
Built at the beginning of the 12th century, Saint-Pierre de Melle church is distinguished by the finesse of its sculptural program. Inside, you'll admire a succession of historiated capitals, thorn pullers, entombments, monsters and other evocative motifs. There are some exceptional Carolingian epitaphs, proof that the mining town was a particularly literate one, as well as the burial site of the founder of the Bachelerie, a festival for young men to be married that was celebrated until 1974. Visit the Evangelists at the south portal, treated here in their animal form.
