SAINT-SAVINIAN CHURCH
Church having the particularity to be built in the enclosure of the old feudal castrum in Melle
The oldest of Melle's three Romanesque churches, Saint-Savinien is the only one to have been built inside the town walls, with its chevet resting on the old fortifications. Relegated to the status of prison in 1801 and for almost 150 years, Saint-Savinien still bears the traces of its former inhabitants, with graffiti honoring their memory. Its religious vocation was restored in the 1960s, and the church now hosts a variety of concerts and cultural events. It is also the setting for a magnificent series of stained glass windows by Rémy Hysbergue (2012).
