Gate built in the 13th century and framed by 2 towers in Parthenay, open on the road to Compostela and the Saint-Jacques suburb

One of the 4 gates of Parthenay, built in the 13th century. It opens onto the Compostela route and the picturesque medieval suburb of Saint-Jacques, a former weavers' quarter (don't miss the crossroads of the Vierge-Noire). This superb vaulted passage, defended by a portcullis and a stunner, is framed by two almond-shaped towers. It is surmounted by a guardroom accessible by a spiral staircase leading to the covered way of the neighbouring wall. The work was resumed in the 15th-16th centuries to add a firing opening for a firearm.
