The Citadelle jealously guards its jewels, including the Prison Garden, where the dungeons closed in 1926 remain
Erected in the 13th century, the Porte de la Citadelle, also known as the Tour de l'Horloge, opened onto the seigniorial quarter, the center of power. Its bell appeared in 1454 (the current bell tower is later). Bordered by the Prée, a vast, once defensive area enclosed by ramparts, the Citadelle jealously guards its jewels: the ruins of the castle, the Prison Garden (where the dungeons, closed in 1926, remain), the facade of Notre-Dame-de-la-Couldre (12th century, historiated portal depicting the Annunciation) and the Church of Sainte-Croix. The panoramas are superb.
