THE BIRDS OF THE POITEVIN MARSHLANDS
An 8-hectare nature area in the heart of the wet marsh, home to numerous ornithological specimens.
Even as a child, he dreamed of creating his own bird park. Francis Hervouet is an enthusiast, and it's in his 8-hectare park that he reveals the rich biodiversity of the Marais. The Venise Verte is an exceptional site, with the greatest diversity of bird species in France (337). Here, you'll discover eighty of them, or three hundred birds, from whistling ducks to kingfishers, Canada geese, sparrows, common eiders and black storks, all in their natural habitat. The park also features some of the region's domestic animals, such as the Poitou baudet, the mulassier draught horse, Marans hens and roosters, and Marais Poitevin gray geese. Take a leisurely stroll along the paths lined with information panels, and enter the aviaries. There are treasure hunts to spice up your visit, and the film Le Marais Poitevin à tire d'ailes is shown continuously. To complete the visit, the park offers boat trips. You can embark on tours lasting 1 to 2 hours, with or without a boatman. The more adventurous can rent a canoe and explore the marshes where boats can't go. There are shaded areas for picnics, and a restaurant serving market garden dishes made with local produce and wild plants from the marsh is open to visitors.
