THE HALLS
Discover the history of the halles, destroyed and rebuilt, a symbol of resilience and evolution in Sauzé-Vaussais.
On the market square were former market halls, a wooden building covered with tiles; they were destroyed at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1870, the foundation stone of the "Halle aux blés", or "Halle aux grains", was laid in the place of the present Socio-Cultural Centre. It suffered initial damage in February 1935, after a cyclone, and was totally destroyed in June 1944, during the war. The new halls built at the beginning of the 1950s were financed by state funds following war damage. Several rooms were later fitted out on the first floor and the halls were converted into a socio-cultural centre.
