CHATEAU D'OIRON - MUSEE D'ART CONTEMPORAIN
Since 1993, this singular château has housed a collection of modern art, conceived as a cabinet of curiosities with temporary exhibitions
The singular Château d'Oiron, transformed in 1546 by the powerful Gouffiers, bought by Madame de Montespan from the court in 1700, then battered by armed conflict and the passage of time, retains some exceptional Renaissance features (including the Galerie du Grand-Écuyer, also known as the Galerie des Peintures). Since 1993, it has housed Jean-Hubert Martin's contemporary art collection, Curios & Mirabilia. Conceived as a cabinet of curiosities, in memory of the great collector Claude Gouffier, this fabulous sensory journey is scattered from the interiors to the gardens, appealing to the senses of sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste. To date, this is the most important inclusion of French contemporary art in an ancient monument; most of the works were created specifically for their setting, and offer an exceptional diversity of reflections on living art, heritage and... human relationships. Among its indescribable emblems and jewels are a gallery of portraits of Oiron schoolchildren by Christian Boltanski, the annual Dinner designed by Raoul Marek for 150 Oironnais, represented by their profiles on Sèvres plates (held every June 30), and Georg Ettl's Suite des Chevaux de Fusain. Take a guided or self-guided tour, looking up at the ornate ceilings from the 16th and 17th centuries. Temporary exhibitions all year round, a superb boutique, a park to explore with the kids and the Promenons-nous! kit
