THE UNDERGROUND DOVECOTE
A listed historic monument, this troglodyte dovecote is the only example of its kind in the Poitou-Charentes region.
A listed historic monument, this troglodyte dovecote is the only specimen of its kind in the Poitou region. On the surface, its slate-covered, 3 m-high circular tower belies the splendour of the 12 m shaft, pierced by 1,875 rectangular bolts, and its maze, which extends deep into the earth. The dating of this unusual construction, part of the Clos du Bois Ménard winery, is estimated, without certainty, at the 7th century. It is also difficult to determine the function of its vast, irregularly laid-out hall.
