ST. GEORGE'S CHAPEL
The Saint-Georges chapel is endowed with exceptional frescoes
The castral chapel of Saint-Georges, although restored at the end of the 15th century when Philippe de Commynes, the writer of memoirs from the reigns of Louis XI and Charles VIII, was lord of the place, has kept its 11th century Romanesque choir. The vault of the apse has been frescoed with a mural representing Christ in glory, accompanied on either side by the symbols of the four evangelists. In a mandorla, Christ, seated on a circular throne, makes the gesture of blessing with his right hand and holds a book in his left hand. He is dressed in a green tunic and a large red mantle. These frescoes are truly exceptional since there are very few examples of painted walls today. The colours that have changed over time are nevertheless important witnesses and allow us to imagine what was visible to the people of that time, thus erasing the stereotypical idea of a dull and sad Middle Ages.
