BARONY OF SAINT-CASSIEN
The Barony of Saint-Cassien and its magnificent keep with a square tower benefit from a medieval military architecture
It is a beautiful example of medieval military architecture. The barony of Saint-Cassien and its magnificent keep dominate the Briande valley. The first square tower was built by Foulques Nerra, Count of Anjou, at the same time as the keep of Moncontour in the 11th century. Briand de Saint-Cassien had it fortified in the 13th century during the Hundred Years War, to resist the English. Richelieu had the fortress dismantled in the XVIIth century (a corner tower and a staircase).
