ABBEY OF FONTAINE-LE-COMTE
Cistercian abbey, the latest of the religious foundations that surround the capital of Poitiers with a monastic crown.
In the 12th century, Fontaine-le-Comte Abbey was the last of the religious foundations that surrounded the capital of Poitiers with a veritable monastic crown. From the road between Lusignan and Poitiers, one can see its imposing proportions. It was William, 8th Count of Poitou and 10th Duke of Aquitaine, who donated his lands to Geoffrey de Loriol to found the Cistercian abbey. Upon entering, one is struck by the length of the nave: 55 meters and by its sobriety.
