MEDIEVAL CASTLE
Old castle with beautiful ruins, the first construction dates from the 10th century, with high curtains and corner towers
From its promontory, it displays its beautiful ruins. The first castle was built in the late 10th century, but dismantled in 1179. By siding with the King of France during the revolt of the Aquitaine and Poitevin lords, Geoffroy IV de Rancon was able to rebuild the castle we know today around 1250, and it was fortified after 1356. Take a look at the high curtain walls, corner towers, archways and entrance châtelet. Mérimée saved it from destruction in 1840 by registering it as a Monument Historique. In summer, escape game and events.
