LA PORTE BOURBON
The most visible vestige of the old ramparts, the Bourbon Gate, formerly called the Aubues Gate
The Bourbon Gate is the most visible vestige of the old city walls. It was so called in the 1830s, when the municipality named the road that crossed the old city from east to west "Bourbon Street". The gate was formerly called "Porte des Aubues", a term that designates a wet land that was difficult to cultivate, like the one that must have constituted the land around the fairground in the Middle Ages. Dating from the 13th century, the gate, with its two towers, has preserved defensive elements such as machicolations, gunports and archways.
