SAINT-HILAIRE DU MARTRAY
Church home to a magnificent painting, La Vierge à l'Enfant.
The former chapel of the Carmelite convent, which was established in this area of Loudun in the 14th century, became the parish church in 1803. The Martray door, built in the 13th century, is the only survivor of the four doors built at that time. In the 19th century, the nave was covered by a stone vault and the chevet illuminated by one of the largest stained glass windows in Poitou: The transfiguration of Christ on the mountain. Restored in 2013, the church reveals a baroque style altar given by Richelieu and a magnificent 15th century painting, The Virgin and Child.
