THE SQUARE TOWER
A tower in Londun, offering a breathtaking view of the Loudunais region, and a tour of the medieval garden.
Visible from afar, the Tour Carrée was built in wood in 1040 by Foulques Nerra, Count of Anjou, to protect himself from incursions by the Counts of Poitou. It was razed and rebuilt in stone in the 12th century on the same foundations by his grandson, Foulques le Rechin. Reaching a height of 28 metres, this four-storey watchtower has walls 1.80 metres thick. After a visit to the medieval-inspired garden at its foot, discover the town and the Loudun region by taking the tower's wooden staircase to the top and enjoy the view.
