PORTE DU MARTRAY
An impressive gate with a drawbridge, built in the century, illustrating the art of fortification in the Middle Ages.
In the 13th century, four gates were built to form the fortified enclosure of Loudun designed by Philippe Auguste. Only the Martray gate remains. The fortress had other openings: to the north the Saint-Nicolas gate, to the east Saint-Jean and Notre-Dame. They were destroyed by the will of Richelieu between 1623 and 1634. This door is impressive. Formerly equipped with a drawbridge with arrow, the gate is an illustration of the art of fortification in the Middle Ages. Having undergone several modifications, it has now been restored to its former glory.
