RINGELSTEIN AND HOHENSTEIN CASTLES
Castles in altitude dating from the 13th century, one was a den of robber knights, the other built by the family of Hohenstein
Rising to an altitude of 640 metres, they were built in the 13th century. Ringelstein, owned by the Eguisheim family, passed to the bishop of Strasbourg after the family died out. A den of robber knights, it was destroyed in 1470. The second castle was built by the de Hohenstein family. The bishop of Strasbourg was one of its owners in the 13th century. The walk also includes the astonishing Petit Ringelsberg enclosure, a dry-stone wall dating back to Roman times.
