NOTRE DAME CHURCH
This fortified Romanesque church, overlooking the Gartempe river, is home to a jewel in the crown
Built in several stages between the 11th and 14th centuries, this fortified Romanesque church houses a jewel. In the crypt, wall paintings probably dating from the 1200s depict episodes from the legendary life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Of the highest quality, they testify to the importance of this church and illustrate the period of transition between Romanesque and Gothic art. One of the chapels houses a statue of the Virgin Mary considered miraculous, and its stained-glass window illustrates this event. The surrounding area offers panoramic views of the city.
