The shape of the building refers to the number eight and evokes the Resurrection. The Octagon was originally a cemetery chapel. It is the most original monument in the Montmorillonnais region - there are only two in Europe - and was listed as a Historic Monument in 1840. Built in the 12th century, it had a double function: its upper part housed a chapel linked to the cult of the deceased while the lower part sheltered the cemetery's ossuary in anticipation of the promised resurrection. Stairs lead you to underground galleries.

Monument quasi unique puisqu'il n'y en a que deux en Europe, cette chapelle de la Maison Dieu est l'un des emblèmes de la ville
There are so many mysteries around this octagonal... a mystical place!
