NOTRE DAME CHURCH
A jewel of Romanesque art, it was part of an Cluniac priory at the northern end of the village, on a large square.
It is one of the most beautiful churches in the region. It was built between the 11th and 13th centuries in the Burgundian and Auvergne Romanesque style. On the south façade, one can clearly see, above the window arches, the few stone courses corresponding to the raising of the wall in the 12th century. On the northern façade, the important restoration work of the 19th century can be seen, using a lighter stone. A gable overhangs the roofs and separates the nave and the side aisles. It has a nave with four bays, flanked by narrow aisles, a transept that does not protrude very much and a choir with an ambulatory and radiating chapels. It is enough to pass through the small southern door to be struck by the solemnity of the place, dimly lit by high windows open on blind arcades. Moving towards the choir, one can admire the ambulatory that encircles it, as well as the four radiating chapels pierced by semi-circular bays. From its centre, the entire length of the church can be seen. None of the chapels is dedicated to Our Lady, the entire building being placed under her vocation. However, a 16th century Virgin and Child in polychrome wood is high up in one of the apses. The crowned Virgin expresses, by the delicacy of her features, gentleness and goodness. It is adorned with 121 capitals, of which probably 78, at the most, date with certainty from the 12th century, carved in a coarse-grained granite that prohibits any finesse in the details, and is wrongly treated as primitive or crude.
