L'HYPOGÉE DES DUNES
Funerary chapel in Poitiers, one of the most famous witnesses to the art and religious thought of the early Middle Ages in the West.
Discovered by Father Camille de la Croix in 1878 on the Dunes plateau, this funerary chapel was built in the heart of a necropolis in the ancient city of Lemonum during the High Middle Ages (6th-7th century). Renowned for its rich sculpted decoration and inscriptions, it is one of the most famous witnesses to the art and religious thought of the early Middle Ages in the West. Closed to visitors since 1998 for its preservation, the site is exceptionally opening its doors, but for more information, visit the Holy Cross Museum.
