SAINT-PIERRE CATHEDRAL
Cathedral of Gothic Angevin style, with 2 large square towers that frame 3 sculpted portals
The stone maiden crushes its wide façade with three portals on a pretty square. The street known as "de la Cathédrale", through which you will arrive, was in the Middle Ages the main road that linked the royal power to the ecclesiastical power. Imagine the horses' hooves beating the cobblestones as they escorted from the palace to the cathedral, some of the great figures of history such as Henry II Plantagenet or Eleanor of Aquitaine.
The building, which required more than two centuries of construction (from 1155 to 1379), was influenced by two distinct architectural currents. The Angevin Gothic style first, whose characteristics are asserted from the chevet to the nave. You will discover on the outside a surprising flat chevet and inside the sublime vaults of the three vessels of the nave. As for the western facade, it is in the Ile-de-France Gothic style, with two large square towers framing three elegantly sculpted portals, topped by a rose window. And no, you are not dreaming, this last one strongly resembles one of the rose windows of Notre-Dame de Paris!
But that's not all, Saint-Pierre contains other unknown jewels. Some will tell you about its gigantic Clicquot organ, the very old stalls from the middle of the 13th century, the immense stained glass window of the Crucifixion that casts its bright colors on the bedside or the mural paintings recently uncovered in the south transept arm. At 20 meters high, their magnificence and finesse are remarkable.
