HOTEL BERTHELOT
Renaissance-style hotel with Italian-style sculpted decor, home to the Centre d'études supérieures de civilisation médiévale
This Renaissance-style mansion, built around 1529 by René Berthelot, one of Poitiers' mayors, now houses the Centre d'études supérieures de civilisation médiévale, the university's research laboratory. Just a few metres from the Place de la Liberté, it's one of the city's many hidden treasures, and can be accessed via the porch overlooking the steeply sloping Rue de la Chaîne. Among the Italian-style sculpted decoration, you'll see medallion portraits of the owner and his wife, as well as their coat of arms.
