LA RIVE DROITE DU CLAIN
Walk on the right bank of the Clain, a stroll that connects the cemetery of the Hôpital des Champs to the avenue de Paris in Poitiers
Head north, at the foot of the plateau, near the Porte de Paris. We suggest a walk on the right bank of the Clain, along the cliff. This walk connects the cemetery of the Hôpital des Champs to the Avenue de Paris. Did you know that the rue de l'Hôpital took its name because of a plague epidemic that ravaged Poitiers around 1520 and that to avoid contagion, the sick were treated outside the city "in the fields". It is therefore through green, natural wet meadows that you will walk and take three pedestrian footbridges, one spans a spawning ground (a breeding ground for fish and amphibians), the other the Doue arm and the last one, the Clain arm. From the bank, you will admire the sculptures of the limestone rocks of the Porteau and if you are brave enough, you will climb to the top of the cliff to discover a superb view of the Clain valley and the town's bell towers.
