A Belgian cuisine inn offers lunch or dinner from a menu.

Imagine yourself in the heart of the countryside and without warning, you find yourself at the Belgian Treasure. You will discover a menu entirely focused on the cuisine of the Flat Country. The best Belgian flavors are there, within reach of your taste buds, and André Willemsen will present them to you: grey shrimp croquettes, gambas with raspberry gueuze, waterzooï, Flemish-style carbonade... Don't forget the cheese, with Grevenbroecker, the Belgian blue cheese par excellence. And to finish, a crêpe Suzette. Unless you fall for the lobster menu...

Arrived at 13h10. Chef and owner greeted us by looking at his watch and a grumpy look and not particularly enthusiastic that customers had arrived at such a ‘late hour’. Told us we could order but it’s rather late. Ordered a Martini, probably the meanest quantity I’ve ever received. My wife had the gambas with raspberry vinaigrette, impeccably cooked, I had the beef carpaccio which was disappointing in serving size and flavor as had so much rock salt dominating all other flavors. I then had the flemish beef carbonnade. Again small portions with good meat quality but rather average taste (no better or worse than a dozen brasseries I’ve experienced in Brussels). Due to the unwelcoming and gruff demeanor of the chef owner, we declined following up with desert and coffee. We live just 5km away, cannot recommend unfortunately.

We ordered, ate, paid and left before all other customers had finished their deserts. Rather than accept late arrivals and then treating them with disdain, it would be preferable to politely request that they return another time.

The response of the chef is a masterclass in how to ensure an enthusiastic opportunistic customer is never converted to a loyal returning customer. Word of mouth is mightier than the pen.
