Dating from the 12th century, the priory church of Saint-Sylvain de Saint-Sauvant was attached to the abbey of Celles-sur-Belle in 1121. The facades are devoid of sculptures, but inside, once past the bell tower-porch, the capitals are decorated with owls and other figures of Romanesque imagery. The name of Saint-Sylvain is reminiscent of the Roman god of the forests, Sylvanus, and it suits perfectly the church of a small village known for its vast forest!
