ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH
The church of Saint-Georges, located in Vivonne, has been restored to reveal painted decorations of great beauty.
According to legend, the church was built on the very spot where the white horse of Saint-Georges landed after a prodigious leap across the Clain. According to another legend, it was here that François Ravaillac had a vision that inspired him to assassinate Henri IV. For sure, the church was rebuilt at the end of the 12th century according to the Angevin Gothic style with the nave and the portal from the beginning of the 13th century and the bell tower from the 14th century. The Great Cross would have been placed in 1796 to protect itself from destruction. At the beginning of 2000, a restoration brought to light painted decorations of great beauty.
