An eminently social place in the villages, the washhouse located in Vouneuil-sous-Biard
The pretty little wash house of the old bridge is located on the banks of the Boivre. Built in the 19th century, its stone walls, its frame and its tiles were restored in 1992. The department counts more than 180 wash houses, fed by fountains or streams... For a long time, the washing was done on the edge of the river on a sloping stone or on a simple plank and without shelter. At the end of the 18th century, a growing need for hygiene was felt, hence the first wash houses were built. It was an eminently social place in the villages.
