CHESSBOARD OF MOUSSAIS LA BATAILLE
Probable site of the Battle of Poitiers, which marked the beginning of the reconquest by the Franks of lands acquired from the Arabs.
From the heights of Vouneuil-sur-Vienne, at the top of the hill, there's a breathtaking view over the landscape where the Battle of Poitiers took place in 732. Here, the Franks led by Charles Martel repelled the onslaught of an Umayyad army led by the Emir of Spain, Abd-El-Rahman. On site, a giant chessboard with illustrated panels, a booklet and an audio guide (available from the tourist office) reveals the background to the confrontation and its protagonists.
