CHOUVIGNY CASTLE
This castle is one of the rare examples of medieval military architecture in Auvergne.
Today's fortress owes its bold construction to Guillaume I de Chauvigny. In 1250, wishing to command the Sioule gorges, he had this fortified castle built, towering over the river by more than 80 meters. Chouvigny was subsequently owned by various noble families. The de La Fayette family also occupied it for three centuries. In 1853, the Duc de Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III, bought the building and had it restored. Today, the château is in perfect condition. It is one of the rare examples of medieval military architecture in Auvergne.
