GASSENDI MUSEUM
Museum presenting a wide range of regional heritage and houses Flemish and Italian paintings from the Renaissance
Located in the heart of the city in a former 16th century hospice, this museum, renovated in 2003, is like a cabinet of curiosities. With a remarkable diversity, it offers five centuries of art, history and science, and has very rich naturalist and artistic collections. It also gives pride of place to contemporary artists from here and elsewhere, who are often inspired by the local environment to create bridges in situ. The museum is organized into four main areas: the 19th century, the ancient art collection, the science rooms and contemporary art. The landscape room is particularly interesting, featuring 19th century Provencal paintings and an earth wall built by the master of land art, the English artist Andy Goldsworthy. The museum offers its digital application Gassendi Curiosity, which allows you to choose a discovery tour from among fifteen or so tempting names: "Head in the stars" or "Animal tales and legends", and then to wander around the museum in a personalised way, creating your own collection and sharing your favourites and comments on social networks in English and/or French. The ultimate feature of this museum like no other: it goes beyond its walls in collaboration with CAIRN, the Centre for Informal Art and Research on Nature, which covers more than 200,000 hectares. You will be able to admire permanent works of art installed in the middle of nature. An opportunity to reconcile art and rurality, or art and nature.
