ANCIENT CANAL DU VERDON
An interesting hike and visit to discover the old Verdon canal, an impressive structure built under Napoleon III.
The old Canal du Verdon, built by convicts under Napoleon III (1866-1875), ran alongside the Verdon and supplied water to Aix-en-Provence. A technical feat of 82 km, recognized at the 1878 Universal Exhibition, it was gradually abandoned in the 1970s, in favor of the Canal de Provence. The hike starts on the left bank of the Verdon, downstream from Lac de Quinson. This idyllic, tree-lined path leads to the hut of the canal guard, who was once responsible for its upkeep. A magnificent and poetic family walk not to be missed!
