THE PRIORY OF GANAGOBIA
A priory in an exceptional geographical setting at Ganagobie, listed as a Monument Historique.
Ganagobie was inhabited in prehistoric times and its plateau still distinguishes itself from vestiges of different periods. The monastery has an exceptional geographical position, dominating the Durance on a magnificent plateau covered with green oaks, more than 650 metres above sea level.
Situated in the th century, the Romanesque church has a remarkable portal to the scalloped scalloped and has beautiful mosaics with a fauna and flora in red sandstone, white marble and black limestone. The cloister is of great austerity, its irregular quadrilateral form offers a true sink of light and peace in the building. Its decoration is sober, composed mainly of capitals covered with stylized sheets. A library carved in the rock houses within the religious community more than 8 000 ancient works dating from the th to the th centuries. The classification for Historical Monuments will be phased in from 1886 to 1988, when all the buildings will be permanently classified.
