BAPTISTERY OF RIEZ
Baptistery remodeled and restored in Riez, intended primarily for baptisms, part of a large episcopal group
The baptistery was generally used once a year, for the baptismal ceremony that took place on Easter night. Fortunately, it has been preserved, and the eight columns and immersion basin can still be admired today. Part of a large episcopal group built on the remains of ancient Roman baths, this baptistery was erected in the5th century A.D. It remains one of the few moving testimonies of this period, since the seat of the bishopric was dismantled during the French Revolution.
