ÉCOMUSÉE L'OLIVIER
Ecomuseum dedicated to the culture of the olive tree, the history and culture of the plant, the manufacture of its oil, tasting on site
Nestled in a former 20th-century lime kiln, the Écomusée de l'Olivier is a treasure trove where limestone was transformed into quicklime. The building is located at the foot of the "La Roche Amère" mountain, at the entrance to the Luberon. Here, Olivier Baussan has installed his collection of olive-related objects gleaned from around the Mediterranean. Since 2015, the Écomusée has been owned by Maison Brémond 1830, which promotes olive growing. From the biology to the mythology of the tree, each step is an invitation to travel from Provence to the shores of the Mediterranean.
To learn all about the history of the olive tree and the production of its oil, this eco-museum is a must-see. Discover how olive oil has been used over the centuries, from its role as fuel to the art of pruning the tree to its use in soap-making.
The scenography is a feast for the eyes: captivating videos, showcases of rare objects and displays of old machinery immerse you in the history and mythology of the olive tree. Children will also appreciate the age-appropriate quizzes.
An adjoining boutique will delight gourmets with products from Maison Brémond 1830, Biscuiterie de Forcalquier and the famous Confiserie du Roy René d'Aix-en-Provence. An ice-cream parlour open from Easter to September. The Écomusée is a lively place, hosting events such as cooking classes, a Christmas market and conferences. A must-see place to immerse yourself in the richness of olive-growing culture!
