ENGLISH PALACE
Palace built in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, whose central dome is supported on the main façade by four caryatids.
Built in 1885 under the name of Hôtel des Anglais, opposite the train station, the place was the first hotel establishment open in the town in 1885: it hosted the gotha of European aristocracy during winter. Each floor has a frieze of different style. The central dome is supported, in the main facade, by four caryatids and displays the Royal Arms of Great Britain and Ireland with the lion and unicorn representation. Without forgetting the French motto Honni soit qui mal y pense ("Evil be to him who thinks evil of it") of the Order of the Garter. Ironwork balconies are of Art Nouveau inspiration. The hotel was visited by one of the sons of the Queen Victoria and brother of Édouard VII, the prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn the United Kingdom. The building was used as a military hospital during the First World War before being transformed into an apartment building in 1939.
