The Grand Jas Cemetery was opened on 1 March 1866, taking over the old Suquet graveyard, then that of Caroubier on the current location of the Méro school at Rue des Suisses. With its 9 hectares floors, the Grand Jas is now the largest intramural park of the city and one of the most remarkable graveyards of southern France owing to its geographical location, its landscape architecture, its ancient trees and its rich floral decoration. A privileged place for meditation, many personalities who have contributed (or not) to the economic and cultural influence of Cannes are buried there: Prosper Mérimée, Jean Mineur, André Capron, Henry Brougham, Pierre Gazagnaire, Émile Negrin, Pierre-Karl Fabergé, Nicolas Popoff, Olga Khokhlova, Jacques Monod…
