MUSEUM OF WORLD EXPLORATIONS
Museum of world explorations installed in a medieval castle overlooking the old port of Cannes, animations proposed.
This medieval castle located at the top of the Suquet hill, overlooking the old port, was once the property of the abbots of Lérins. Today classified as a historical monument, it houses the collections of the Cannes museum since 1952; fruit of the passion of 19th century travelers such as Ginoux de La Coche, fascinated by the Oceanian atolls, the Marquesas Islands and pre-Columbian America. Among them: the Dutch baron Lycklama, curious about Middle Eastern civilizations and lover of Egyptian and Mediterranean antiquities, bequeathed his collections to the city to create its first museum. Visitors can admire collections of primitive art from all over the world, including Himalayan-Tibetan, Arctic and Oceanic, as well as Mediterranean archaeology and an impressive collection of musical instruments from around the world, not to mention 19th-century landscape paintings.
Climbing the 109 steps to the top of the 11th century keep offers an incredible view of the bay of Cannes and the Lerins Islands. The entrance of the museum is embellished with a garden composed of various Mediterranean species, including large umbrella pines that invite you to walk. The museum, now called "Museum of World Explorations", offers a varied calendar of temporary exhibitions, highlighting the diversity of Cannes' collections. You can also enjoy numerous activities and workshops for children throughout the year.
