MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORY OF PROVENCE - MAHP
Museum offering an ideal setting for the thematic collections installed, and restores the atmosphere of daily life in Provence
This mansion was built between 1771 and 1774 by the Marquis of Clapiers-Cabris and his wife, sister of the deputy of Mirabeau. The plans were drawn by the Milanese architect Jean Orello. To displease his mother, the young marquis had a gorgon head sculpted above the entrance door, vomiting snakes. The problem was that this extravagance ended up costing him dearly; the unfinished building had to be sold at auction by his only daughter. It was then ransacked and transformed into apartments, before becoming the property of the city of Grasse, then a museum in 1921.
The site serves as an ideal setting for numerous thematic collections: crafts, earthenware, pottery, clothing, archaeological objects, and others related to olive oil production. They retransmit the atmosphere of daily life in Provence from prehistoric times to the 18th century, the era of decorative arts. Visitors will discover a complete reconstruction of a Provençal kitchen, the private apartments of the Marquis and the Marquise, as well as a 1,200 square meter interior French garden. This garden, classified as a historical monument, was restored to its former splendor by the Viscount de Noailles in 1967.
The building offers a unique opportunity to travel back in time to the heart of Grasse and its history, through the beauty of the state rooms and its impressive collection of objects and works.
