MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORY OF PROVENCE - MAHP
Museum offering an ideal setting for the thematic collections installed, and restores the atmosphere of daily life in Provence
The Hôtel de Clapiers-Cabris, built between 1771 and 1774 by the Marquis de Clapiers-Cabris, is a landmark in the history of Grasse. Designed by Milanese architect Jean Orello, the building has a surprising anecdote: to spite his mother, the young marquis had a snake-spitting gorgon head carved above the entrance door. This audacity proved costly, as the unfinished hotel was sold at auction by his only daughter. After deterioration and conversion into apartments, it became a museum in 1921.
Today, the hotel houses the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence (M.A.H.P.), with its fascinating collections on daily life in Provence, from prehistory to the 18th century. The museum also features works of fine and decorative art from the 17th century to the first half of the 20th century. You'll discover ceramics, sculptures, textiles, jewelry, as well as objects linked to olive oil production and local crafts.
The museum invites you to explore the recreation of a Provençal kitchen, the private apartments of the Marquis and the Marquise, and a magnificent 1,200 m² French garden, listed as a historic monument. The garden was restored to its former glory by the Viscount de Noailles in 1967.
A true journey back in time, to the heart of Grasse's history and traditions, through ceremonial rooms and an exceptional setting.
