PENITENTIAL CHAPELS
The Penitents offered services and acts of charity by helping the most destitute for example
Penitents were important in the life of the village: these lay people (who do not belong to the clergy) with their distinctive clothes offered services and acted as charities by helping the most deprived for example. They are very attached to Mary, hence these terms which also make it possible to distinguish them according to their chapels.
The Chapel of the Annunciation, known as the "penitents from above", is a religious building built in the first half of the 18th century. Its ellipsoidal plan and curvilinear façade recall the ambitions of the Baroque period. The bell tower is topped with a bulb and the chapel houses a museum of religious objects.
The Chapel of the Assumption, known as the "penitents from below", is a religious building built in the first half of the 18th century. The decoration is in the flamboyant Baroque style. On the right, stands a bell tower called "Italian style".
