Old village in La Brigue, preserving its medieval authenticity during the great earthquake of 1564
The castle and its keep were destroyed by the great earthquake of 1564, only ruins remain. Fortunately, the old village has kept its 15th century medieval authenticity, a little far from the world. The region's green schist is found in many facades, lintels, arcades and fountains. Many green shale lintels are often engraved with the coats of arms of wealthy families, philosophical maxims or religious symbols. The architecture of the houses is unique to this mountain region and reflects the harsh climate. The stone walls are very thick and each house is equipped with a wooden balcony covered by a large roof. Doors and windows remain small in size to offer maximum resistance to cold intrusion. The entrance doors are raised one or two steps to keep them out of reach of runoff water and snow.
