While working on the sets for the Salle des Mariages, Cocteau noticed an abandoned 17th-century fort: the Bastion. The mayor of the time, Francis Palmero, suggested that he turn it into a museum for his works, and the artist, charmed by the site, accepted, while rejecting the term museum: " I'll change my works as soon as they take on an air of habit ". In keeping with his philosophy, the museum now dedicated to him changes the exhibition of his works every year. Cocteau was aware, however, that in the autumn of his life, the Bastion would take on a testamentary vocation. He kept a meticulous eye on every detail of this creation: from the decoration of the eleven loopholes to that of the frontispiece, not forgetting the pebble mosaic adorning the visitors' entrance, depicting a lizard, " symbol of Mediterranean laziness ". The "Musée du Bastion de Jean Cocteau" was inaugurated in 1966. The original collection comprises 102 works, supplemented by further donations and acquisitions. Following the flooding of the Musée Jean Cocteau- Collection Wunderman, the Bastion now houses some of the works in this collection, making it an essential stop on the tour of Cocteau's work in Menton. For the full experience, a visit to the marriage hall in the town hall is a must! The room was entirely decorated by the artist in 1958, including the eternal portraits of lovers, traced in a meander of lines in the colors of Menton.
